About Mint Hill, NC

Wikipedia says Mint Hill was founded around 1750 by Scots-Irish pioneers and was the first town created in Mecklenburg County. Its charter was given up in 1910 and the town ran without elected officials until it incorporated again in 1971. It counted 26,450 residents in 2020 and straddles southeastern Mecklenburg County with a small part in Union County.

The straight-line gap between Indian Land (ZIP 29707) and the Mint Hill town center is about 17.5 miles in the Census Gazetteer.

Yard debris rules in Mint Hill

Mint Hill collects leaves in clear yard waste bags weekly with the garbage run, up to 10 bags a week, and says blowing leaves into the street violates its stormwater ordinance.

Limbs and brush are separated from other waste, no more than 5 feet long and 6 inches across, in no more than one pile about 4 feet high, 4 feet wide and 5 feet long per week. If yard waste exceeds those specifications, the town's page says no service will be provided.

Mint Hill takes leaves in bags or containers (weekly with garbage), so volume is the planning problem. A quarter acre of leaves can fill dozens of bags, and we plan around the town's bag limits or load the extra for hauling.

Storms, trees and burning

FEMA's National Risk Index (December 2025) rates Mecklenburg County's overall risk as relatively high, with ice storms rated relatively high, strong wind relatively high and tornadoes relatively high. For a yard, those ratings point at limbs and debris.

Mecklenburg County prohibits burning yard waste, according to the Matthews and Mint Hill town pages, so cleanups here end with hauling, not a burn pile.
