Planting for Carolina clay
Most yards around Charlotte, Union County, York County and Lancaster County sit on red clay. It holds water after storms and bakes hard in July. Most failed shrubs we see were planted too deep or in a hole that acts like a bathtub. We set root balls slightly high, loosen the surrounding soil instead of digging a smooth-walled pit, and finish with mulch or straw to hold moisture and keep roots cool.
Plant choice matters just as much. We favor proven performers for the Piedmont, such as hollies, loropetalum, distylium, abelia, tea olive, crape myrtle, red maple and native options where you want them, and we match each one to its sun, mature size and spacing so it does not outgrow the window in three years.
Best time to plant
Fall is the best planting season in the Charlotte area. Soil is still warm, so roots grow all winter while tops are dormant, and plants go into their first summer established. Spring planting works too, with more watering. We can plan a fall install alongside your leaf cleanup.
Mulch or pine straw?
Pine straw is a Carolina classic: it is light, stays on slopes and lets water through. Hardwood mulch looks more finished in formal beds and breaks down into the soil. Many HOAs specify one or the other. We will recommend what fits your beds and your neighborhood and quote it by your bed area.
Finish it with lighting
New beds and trees look even better lit at night. Ask us to quote landscape lighting with your planting so wire can be run while the beds are open.

Landscaping, Trees & Shrubs questions
Do you install trees and shrubs?
Yes. We plant shrubs, small and medium trees, and privacy screens, and we can remove old or overgrown plants first.
Do you install pine straw or mulch?
Both. We will recommend what fits your beds and your HOA.
How do you price landscaping?
Every job is quoted individually after we see the yard. There is no package or per-plant price list because sizes, access and soil vary.
Do you guarantee plants?
Ask us when we quote. We will put any plant warranty terms in writing on your estimate.
Can you do a quick refresh before I sell my house?
